What To Expect From Your Wedding Planner

Updated: Jul 28, 2020

Many couples wonder if hiring the services of a wedding planner is the best choice for them.

Well the truth is it all depends on what type of wedding you are having. A simple civil wedding without a reception could go on without the assistance of a wedding planner but a full wedding ceremony no matter how small or big requires a wedding planner.

Weddings are joyful and happy occasions, but sometimes planning one can be a stressful and an unhappy process. One of the best solutions for this would be to hire a wedding planner. Before hiring someone, you have to know what services they offer and how beneficial it will be to you. To give you a clear vision of what a wedding planner does we listed some of the main jobs they cover and what they do.

Typically, wedding planners start by meeting with the couple to:

  • Get acquainted and start discussions.

  • Understand the vision of the couple for their wedding.

  • Understand the style, colors, vibe, and taste of the couple.

  • Understand the events—not just the wedding day itself, but also the rehearsal dinner, bridesmaid teas, day-after brunches, and any other related events.

  • Review the overall budget.

  • Discuss progress to date.

The budget is a very important aspect and will affect every decision of the wedding. Your planner will help you discuss how best your budget can get you the wedding of your dreams. Some couples are able to manage their budgets themselves, but others might need or want some assistance with that.

It can be discouraging to find out how many event vendors there are (and how many people it takes to make a wedding a success). The hardest task of planning a wedding is probably to know whom to trust and who is right for you. However, once you find a good wedding planner the rest is much easier. They can recommend venues and suppliers they have worked with before and know how to get the best prices and the best results from them.

The vision for your wedding is a planners top most concern. Another job of a wedding planner is to make sure the couple’s vision for the wedding has been achieved. It sometimes seems hard to explain your vision to your wedding planner, but if you create a vision board this can make it a lot easier for you. This way the wedding planner can help you define the right look, style mood, and emotions you want to create. They know all about the latest trends and know what will work in your venue and how to bring the desired mood to life.

Most events almost always involve some kind of crisis at a certain point. No couple really wants to deal with this on their wedding day, because your wedding day only happens once, and it can never be repeated. Wedding planners know how to handle all unforeseen circumstances due to experience and hands on information. So invest in hiring a wedding planner and they will ensure you a worry-free and stress-free day, which allows you to enjoy your day just like your guests!

However, if you do appoint a wedding planner, these are some of the things to watch out for;

A good wedding planner must be easy to contact and responsive to your needs. If your planner doesn't return your calls promptly or doesnt seem organized, look elsewhere.

Beware of wedding planners who are getting kickbacks for recommending a certain vendor. Make sure you are hearing about vendors who are right for you and not just those who have a hand in the wedding planner's pocket.

You must like your planners taste and style and they should be in sync with your vision. Your big day should look like you and not your planner.

A clear contract should be laid out like with any vendor. The contract should spell out duties, costs, expenses, deposits and payment schedules. There should be clauses that spell out how increased duties and costs will be negotiated, and what happens if the planner fails to meet obligations or you want to cancel the contract.
